The architecture in his paintings is painstakingly detailed. The mood fanciful. The colors resplendent. Parks Pegram Duffey III draws inspiration from the vibrant world around him.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Duffey has travelled extensively; living in Washington, DC; Charleston, South Carolina; and the Caribbean Islands. His work illustrates the unique characteristics of each locale.
A self-taught artist, Duffey captures the world in a distinctly primitive yet very realistic style. Detailed architecture, colorful gardens and brilliant skies are some of his trademarks.
Duffey, 36, started drawing at age four after visiting the ruins of Rosewell Plantation in Gloucester County, Virginia. The image lingered in Duffey's mind and he began to imagine what the plantation looked like before it was destroyed. "I became fascinated with it," Duffey remembers. "I started drawing and I became possessed. Soon after I started to paint; my first painting was 'Rosewell'."
Today, Duffey's work is displayed in numerous private and corporate collections around the world. Three of Duffey's recent paintings have been accepted into the permanent collection of The White House Historical Association, including, 'The Festive White House with Presidents Past & Present' which was originally commissioned by the National Republican Party in 1989 to celebrate the inauguration of President Bush. Prints signed by Duffey, The President and First Lady (some bearing the Presidential seal) were sent all over the world.
Because of his meticulous research and unerring artistic reproductions, Duffey has been commissioned to paint numerous schools, universities, architectural landmarks, annual festivals and private homes.
His depictions of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century South reflect the tranquility of earlier times while his caribbean inspired works like'Island House'; exhibit an exotic serenity.
Through his art, Duffey celebrates life and the world as he sees it.
